Kroeg is the Dutch word for pub. But it’s so much more than a place to drink. It’s a meeting place: where you play games, talk about life and trade stories. Where the problems of the world are discussed and, more often than not, solved. Where people can simply be themselves and escape the noise of everyday life.
At Robert’s place, Het Brandewijntje, everyone is welcome. Feyenoord and Ajax shirts hang side by side on the wall, and every beer comes with a good conversation, free of charge.
In my new documentary KROEG, I dive into the world of old-school pubs and cafés: places full of character, history and unexpected encounters. The kroeg is the living room of the street, a social melting pot where people from every corner of society come together. In a time when real meeting places are disappearing, it remains one of the last.
I’m searching for the stories of the regulars, the bartenders and the barmaids. Stories of friendship, loss, love, struggle and belonging. Stories that are only ever shared in the pub.
